Cadet Officer - Environmental Health
Remuneration: Annual salary $77,004 plus up to 13% superannuation

What we are looking for:
To professionally deliver environmental health services to the community that protect and enhance public health, community amenity, safety and environmental standards by monitoring and enforcing statutory requirements, and through proactive initiatives that positively contribute to overall community wellbeing.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
- In accordance with all applicable legislation and relevant policies and procedures and in a professional, safe and timely manner:
- Work through the application process for licences, registrations and permits including approvals, renewals and transfers within statutory timeframes.
- Subject to level of knowledge and relevant experience, conduct inspections of food premises, including mobile and temporary, ensuring compliance with the Food Act 2006.
- Receive enquiries from the general public relating to environmental health matters and provide advice accordingly, referring complex matters to the Senior Officer - Environmental Health or Coordinator - Environmental Health.
- Provide support to Senior Officer – Environmental Health in assessing development applications with respect to on-site wastewater management, air and noise pollution matters.
- Conduct inspections of potential erosion and sediment control matters, to monitor compliance with the Environmental Protection Act 1994.
- As required and in accordance with relevant policies, procedures, work instructions and industry standards, collect environmental samples for analysis including, but not necessarily limited to, samples of surface water, bore water and asbestos containing material.
- Collect weekly samples from Council’s reticulated water supply systems in accordance with relevant policies, procedures and any service level agreement with the supplier.
- Undertake quarterly surface water and groundwater monitoring of council waste management facilities and closed landfills, as well as any additional surface and leachate water samples, as per council’s Environmental Approval conditions.
- Subject to level of knowledge and relevant experience, review and analyse monitoring results relating to environment health matters against the relevant standards and thresholds, referring complex matters to the Senior Officer - Environmental Health or Coordinator - Environmental Health.
- Ability to undertake and maintain reports pertaining to environmental samples and provide comment on any trends (eg. low/high readings or increase in water levels etc.)
- Maintain monitoring equipment in good order and ensure the equipment is calibrated when required, and replaced, as needed.
- Update Council’s databases and registers including Council’s Customer Request Management (CRM) Authority database and Magiq Docs records management system.
- Actively participate in proactive public health initiatives including vector surveillance programs and other field-based inspection programs.
- Such other relevant duties as required from time to time which would generally fall within the skill and knowledge requirements of this position.
Essential Knowledge & Qualifications Criteria:
- Currently undertaking or willing to undertake an Environmental Health Australia (EHA) accredited Tertiary undergraduate or post-graduate qualification in Environmental Health.
- Ability to attend on campus residential schools throughout the course of the undergraduate or post-graduate program.
- Current professional membership or eligibility for membership of EHA (Queensland Division).
- Demonstrated understanding of all relevant legislation pertaining to the role of an Environmental Health Officer and ability to make sound judgements and apply legislation appropriately.
- Capacity to conduct inspections and investigations into problems of an environmental health nature, including preparation of reports and resolving issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the capacity to influence and negotiate.
- Effective time management skills to ensure legislative and other timeframes are adhered to.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to competently use, interpret and analyse output from specialised monitoring equipment.
- An ability to cope with pressure, prioritise tasks and maintain a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Thorough knowledge of work activities within the health section.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
- Good computer skills including experience with customised systems, intermediate level with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel and Word, and advance use of the internet and email systems.
- Queensland ‘C’ Class driver’s licence that is current and maintained.
