Job Description
Gympie Regional Council currently have a exciting opportunity for a qualified professional to join our Finance team for a period of up to 12 months.
This position is to execute administrative, accounting and internal control processes in support of Council accountability and financial reporting objectives.
The key responsibilities of this role include (but are not limited to):
- Contribute to the accurate and timely distribution of monthly and annual financial information to management and external stakeholders by:
- Undertaking processing of approved financial transactions representing the activities of Council.
- Undertaking integrity and review processes prior to the distribution of financial information.
- Presenting financial information in a format that is useful to users.
- Complying with Australian Accounting Standards, the Local Government Act and Local Government Finance Standard.
- Compiling and providing working papers in support of accounting estimates for review and audit purposes.
- Support Council Corporate Governance processes by:
- Undertaking actions as directed through Council policy, work instructions and accounting procedures.
- Compiling, implementing and conforming to Council internal control and internal checking arrangements.
- Complying with accounting, taxation and corporate legislation.
- Assisting with the completion and review of key account reconciliations.
- Assisting with physical stock count and impairment review.
- Undertake Council administrative and taxation responsibilities:
- Assisting with taxation responsibilities in the administration of Goods & Services taxation, Fringe Benefits taxation, State taxes and Income tax equivalents.
- Assisting with data requested by external organisations such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Local Government.
- Contributing to Council management by:
- Providing accounting and taxation advice.
- Providing relevant information in a format that supports decision making.
- Undertake any other duties as are reasonably within the limits of the employee's skills, competence and training.
What we are looking for?
To be successful in this role, applicants should have:
- Progress towards Tertiary qualifications (final year student) and equivalent experience in financial accounting or a related discipline.
- Ability to accurately reconcile source documents to system outputs.
- A high degree of computer literacy particularly in spread-sheeting and financial packages.
- Demonstrated understanding of accounting principles and procedures. Demonstrated competency in production of statutory financial reports in accordance with Australian accounting standards and local government regulations.
- Developing knowledge of strategic asset financial processes and procedures.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer system applications, including integrated financial systems, databases, spreadsheets and personal application software.
- Developing knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, Audit Regulations and Queensland Local Government Legislation.
- Experience in applying the practical principles of cost accounting in particular cost assignment and allocation in an activity based costing environment.
- Well-developed analytical and interpretive skills and proven ability to exercise initiative and judgement to meet business needs
- Effective time management skills, including but not limited to, working independently, setting priorities, setting and meeting deadlines and organising own workloads
- Demonstrated high level communication skills (written and oral) to compile reports, correspondence, operational processes and procedures and the ability to liaise with and influence a range of stakeholders to seek cooperation.
- High level interpersonal skills including the ability to work as an effective and positive team member in a customer focused and flexible environment and provide task supervision and on-the-job training.
